There is a significant disconnect between affluence and persistent pockets of poverty in the target communities, which presents unique challenges for students in our schools who are living in poverty wile surrounded by affluence and either cannot afford or do not have access to academic tutoring and support. Approximately half of the students in East Mooresville and Mooresville intermediate schools and Parkview, South, Blythe, and Long Creek elementary schools are economcially disadvantaged. Students from Pineville have poverty rates nearly twice that of the state and national average. Nearly three in four students at Hornet's Nest Elementary qualify for Free or Reduced Priced Lunch (FRPL). Schools in Cornelius, Concord, Kannapolis and Gastonia are lacking technology -- the ratio of students to technology is nearly twice as high as the rest of the state. Across the geographic area, students are diagnosed with dyslexia, ADHD, and anxity disorders that require additional supports that are not readily available -- or affordable -- for these students.
